Problem-Posing Topic: Poor Nutrition Choices at CSUSB
I have chosen to write about the poor nutrition choices we have at CSUSB. The Taco Bell, candy, Starbucks muffins, and pizza students, faculty, prospective students, and guests are consuming is influencing our CSUSB community. I've chosen this topic because I feel it effects nearly all of CSUSB. I am a nutrition major and nutrition is something that impacts our daily lives as well as long-term health. With over 60% of our nation overweight or obese it is time that we make some changes. I am not asking Pizza Hut to become a health food smoothie shop, but merely displaying my concern for the lack of healthy options on campus. Examples of healthier options may include whole grain bread instead of white or wheat, fruit juices, and flavored water options in the pop dispensing machines, and healthy on-the-go snacks in vending machines. I am not sure of who I would contact to make things happen on campus (I'm new) so if anyone has a suggestion, let me know. :)

Well Sudexo is in charge of most of the campus food options here you could talk to a guy named Dave Janosky he is in charge of food services here at cal state.
ReplyDeleteI think the root of the problem might be that most unhealthy things contain high fructose corn syrup and corn is heavily subsidized by the government for whatever reason. so i hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist but the government may be to blame for Americas obesity.
Ehhh...I highly beg to differ. I don't want to debate you on this or anything, but I've been studying high fructose corn syrup for a few years in my nutrition/biochemistry classes and have helped in a research study on HFCS and it's only a tiny bit different than regular sucrose. The real problem is that the quantity of sugar in products that Americans are eating, regardless of what form they come in.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice on who to contact! That should really help :)
I can't say that I know too much scientifically about the subject. I agree that healthy options should be advertised as much as daily specials. In the end, the advertisments displayed depends on the manager of the store. But if we want to promote healthy nutrition, we have to understand that it's not going to be implemented quickly. It will take time to make a transition, because CEO's are more interested in making a profit than worrying about health. This issue will require patience as well as supporters. Nutrition goes hand in hand with proportioning food and working out.
ReplyDeleteI've really concerened about this issue too. I am new this school like you. when I just got here I had no idea what to eat and how to cook. So, I just used to eat the foods at CSUSB. One of my friends had skin problem, having something on her face and feeling itch. She said "When I don't eat healthy foods, I have this kind of problem." After then, we started cooking. But, it is too many work for student ,cooking and stuying at the same time sometimes. I think if students suggest the school officers to change some of the campus foods to healthy foods, it is better than doing nothing and just complaining. When the problem that soft drink like coke is not good for teenagers was brought up as an big issue, some high school didn't sell the drinks on vending machine. You can make this kind of CHANGE. Just start with figuring out how to solve this problem.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing to consider is that the reason healthier choices are limited, is that healthier choices may not sell as well. And the food companies and restaurants that provide the "non healthy choices" sell there products where there is potential for a healthy market. In other words if people keep buying they'll keep selling. When it comes to healthier alternatives its really not the same thing. "Unhealthy choices" tend to sell better. The SMSU has to consider this for bringing in revenue. Even if there are more healthier alternatives how well will they sell?
