Warner-why must you be so difficult?
I am beginning to grasp the concept of the counterpublics but have some concern with them. Ideally you would be able to separate yourself from the physical body and enter the public sphere. Ideally the public sphere would work as a whole and communicate efficiently to work toward the better of the people. However, we get our views, morals, and beliefs from our background. Our race, gender, sexuality, nationality, etc. plays into a part of what we think would benefit us as well as others. I know Warner says that this is not in actuality what happens, but I am still confused by the concept. Whatever Warner.

I have to agree with you. I think that the concept that Warner is attempting to introduce is completely contradictory. On one hand, he is stating that in order to enter the public sphere, we must self-absract. On the other hand, he is saying that there is no way to self-abstract completely, so we must also interject some of ourself. I think the biggest problem lies in the "ideal". The ideal is not actuality, is is just an idea of how things would work in a perfect world. The fact is, we do not live in a perfect world; so while ideals are nice to think about, they have no actual weight. We cannot achieve ideals because there are obstacles to every "perfect" situation.
ReplyDeleteI agree, counterpublics are still confusing even after they were explained to me. Counterpublics seems to serve only one purpose: for people to feel more connected with the person(s) communicating the message. Counterpublics seems to do just that, counter the publics. I think that they hold some validity, I mean, if I were someone that had just had a divorce I would not want advice from someone who has not gone through a parallel experience. But counterpublics seems to only raise the "what if" kinds of response. I really don't know if that makes sense at all out side of my head, sorry.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way that you can completely separate yourself from one's own body right? maybe actors and actresses are able to do it for a movie or TV show, but on a daily basis or for free it is unlikely. And still I do not get where Warner is going with this, do you.. I think not.
